چکیده

MOPITT is a nadir-viewing gas correlation radiometer due to be launched aboard the EOS Terra platform. The feasibility of MOPITT data validation using ground-based sun-viewing spectrometers of moderate resolution is investigated. Several instruments with a spectral resolution of approximately 0.2 cm are now operating in Russia and in China for the monitoring of CO and CH4. A spectrometer of this type has been tested and improved at the University of Toronto. It has also been compared with other spectroscopic instruments in field conditions. The results of these comparisons, and the prospects for further work are presented and discussed.

Ground-based FTIR measurements of CO from the Jungfraujoch: characterisation and comparison with in situ surface and MOPITT data

CO vertical profiles have been retrieved from solar absorption FTIR spectra recorded at the NDSC station of the Jungfraujoch (46.5 N, 8 E and 3580 m a.s.l.) for the period from January 1997 to May 2001. The characterisation of these profiles has been established by an information content analysis and an estimation of the error budgets. A partial validation of the profiles has been performed thr...

Validating MOPITT Cloud Detection Techniques with MAS Images

The Measurements Of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT) experiment will measure the amount of methane and carbon monoxide in the Earth’s atmosphere utilizing spectroscopy in the near Infrared (IR) (2.2, 2.3, and 4.7 μm). In this wavelength region, clouds confound the retrieval of methane and carbon monoxide by shielding both the surface and atmospheric emission below the clouds from MOPITT. A...

CO measurements from the ACE-FTS satellite instrument: data analysis and validation using ground-based, airborne and spaceborne observations

The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) mission was launched in August 2003 to sound the atmosphere by solar occultation. Carbon monoxide (CO), a good tracer of pollution plumes and atmospheric dynamics, is one of the key species provided by the primary instrument, the ACE-Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS). This in-5 strument performs measurements in both the CO 1-0 and 2-0 ro-vibrati...

The MOPITT Version 6 product: algorithm enhancements and validation

The Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) Version 6 (V6) product for carbon monoxide (CO) incorporates several enhancements which will benefit many users of MOPITT data. V6 algorithm improvements are described in detail, and V6 validation results are presented. First, a geolocation bias related to the orientation of the MOPITT instrument relative to the TERRA platform was charac...

Measurements of Pollution In The Troposphere ( MOPITT ) validation through 2006

Comparisons of aircraft measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) to the retrievals of CO using observations from the Measurements of Pollution in The Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument onboard the Terra satellite are presented. Observations made as part of the NASA INTEXB and NSF MIRAGE field campaigns during March–May 2006 are used to validate the MOPITT CO retrievals, along with routine samples from...
